View the “Effects” dialogue

Undo

When you use a "Filter" or "Image" function , the “Undo” button becomes usable on the tool-bar.

It allows you to cancel the last modification, if the result isn't satisfactory.

Of course, that works only if the file has not been saved after this modification!

"Undo" can undo a single change!

If you used successively several functions "Filter" or "Image", only the last modification can be cancelled from this button.

Starting from the 1.92 version, now we have five “Undo” levels by default.

Please, see that paragraph to set a customized number of “Undo” levels.

Custom filter

• This menu entry is rather dedicated to advanced users…
• However, in order to make it more accessible to more users, we added a special paragraph to
• the chapter about the functions details.
• This paragraph'll evolve certainly, because it needs to show more examples that we'll have to create and experiment.
• Thus, don't hesitate to consult it again when an update of this Manual is announced in the Forum !

• The “View” menu •

• At the start-up (none image displayed), only three items of the last group are shown.
• Five groups of commands are set on this usual menu.
• To notice:
• Lock Zoom: the upper¦lower zoom ratio'll be kept when you browse a directory; so, all the displayed images'll be blown-up¦reduced in the same zoom-range.
• Stop Animation, to stop the frames passing for a current "Cartoon" *.GIF, *.MNG or *.ANI file.
• Then, you can see every frame separately with the Next Page¦Previous Page buttons which become available on the tool-bar.
• With some *.MNGs files, it's possible to stop the animation, but the Next Page¦Previous Page buttons are not available.
  It's due to the used MNG Plugin library…
• The *.MPE files are played fine, sound and images.
  But neither the Stop Animation command nor the Next Page¦Previous Page buttons can be used…
• View as Hexa mode, displays a table of hexadecimal codes for the file contents :
• Please, notice that this mode is automatically used for the unsupported images formats,
• You can disable it from the Options  dialogue-boxGeneral
• …Tabs shows ¦ hides the tab-header.
• Each open file has a tab, if enabled in the Options.
• You can configure too the caption-lenght for a tab, and to show a mini thumb-nail or not :
  
  
• When many files are open at the same time, the tab-header is getting too short.
• Then, you may use the two small arrow-buttons to scroll the tabs :

• Status bar¦Tool bar, shows ¦ hides them on the main-window.
• Display colour information:
• The mouse-cursor becomes the well-known pipette,
• An info-text displays the co-ordinates “X” ¦ “Y” for each pixel on the picture.
• This pixel colour-code is indicated as decimal valuesand as hexadecimal values too for HTML use.

• To move a large image in the window with the mouse only, just press the mouse right-button and keep it pressed.
• So, you get a grab-hand cursor with which you can move the picture to any direction.

• The “Window” menu •

• It's an usual menu of Windows ®:
• Tile, uses this files windows layout, when several files are open.
• Tile horizontally makes superposed windows.
• Tile vertically makes juxaposed windows.
• Cascade displays cascaded windows.
• Arrange, aligns the files windows icons (when minimized).
• Minimize All, minimizes into icons all the opened files windows (at the bottom of the main-window).
• Restore All, replaces the files windows like before minimizing.
• The last row(s) of the menu indicate(s) the current file(s).

• The “Info” menu •

• A menu which commands :
• Help, launch the “Help”; the Help folder¦s must be downloaded and unzipped into : …\XnView\Help\…
• Tip of the Day, displays a daily tip at the start-up time. Can be disabled removing the nick of the tick-box. The texts are set in the <tip.ini> file in the XnView folder-root. Each language may have a section, so it's totally translatable easily…
• Available formats, opens a scrolling-list containing all supported formats:
  reading or / and / writing are indicated, also the usual extension(s).
• You can get the whole supported formats easier to read from this page.
• You can get too a table where the list is sorted by extensions with this page.

• PlugIns Information, about plugins libraries; they allow new formats or improve processings for some others; for instance: now, *.MNG are displayed as cartoons!
• Command Line Help, to launch XnView from a “Windows” command line ("Execute"), or from another software which has a command line.

XnView and "Total Commander®"

• Now, the excellent file manager Total Commander by Christian Ghisler uses XnView as an add-on.
  You can display many images formats with the fast Total Commander "Lister" viewer (F3).
  
  
• To do so, you need to configure XnView in Total Commander :
• Open “Lister” for any file,
• Open the Options Menu, "Configure…" dialogue-box,
  
  
  
  
• Use the writing-field set at the bottom of the box 
• Use the button to find and write the Xnview path.
• Whether some formats don't work, while XnView supports them certainly, you must add their extensions in the <wincmd.ini> file :
  [Lister]
  IviewAdditionalTypes=*.ico *.dds *.pps *.icl *.dll *.psd *.cdr *.wmf
• This is just an example, however the types we show here need really this addition. Please, notice that only spaces separate the extensions…

• XnView can provide also thumb-nails to display in the panels of Total Commander.
• The XnView method must be chosen in the Configuration Menu of T.C. Options Thumbnails
• Since XnView 1.8.x, all settings about the thumb-nails in XnView itself are exported for Total Commander !

• Notes
• The *.BMP, *.WMF and *.ICO (32*32 - 16 & 256-color) files are directly displayed by "Lister" (don't use XnView resources).
• This XnView add-on using works with Total Commander 32-bit for Windows 9x®, Windows NT 4.0® and newer,
  Windows 2000®, ME®, and XP®.

• The "Windows 3.1® + Win32S" XnView version works now as a Total Commander 16-bit add-on; However, *.JPG, *.GIF and *.PNG file-types can be displayed only. None additional file-type should be added (limited Win32S resources…).
• That doesn't work with some computers, following the mark, the Windows 3.1x version, and maybe the video-card too…
  There are problems with the old Compaq's PC ®…

• Batch Convert •

• A very used function with XnView.
• The picture below shows the new dialogue-box called by the "Convert" command -button in the tool baror from the "File" menu.
• The General tab is activated by default. The shown page is roughtly the same than the former “Batch convert” dialogue.
• The Transformations tab opens a page similar to the former “Advanced operations”, but improved.
• From the supported formats list, any format is convertible into any other:

• Press the "Add" button,
• Another dialogue-box appears:
  
  
  
  
• In this box, you choose (a) file(s) to convert into another format:

• Select the file by one left-click, then press the "OK" button.
• To select several files in this directory, strike the "Control" key and keep it pressed. Click on every file to convert; when it's ended, click "OK".
• You come back to the previous box.
• Choose the output directory for the converted picture :

• Tick the "Delete original" and / or / "Supress errors", and / or / "Keep original date / time attributes" box(es) if necessary.
• Whether the converted output converted file'ld exist already, choose an entry in the Overwrite combobox (marked with a red frame on the first dialogue pic).
• Press the "Go" button. Following the original picture characteristics, a last dialogue-box may appear; you choose here a type for the converted picture saving, specially when converting into *.GIF:
  
• Tick the appropriate box(es),
• Press the "OK" button to launch the conversion.
• Finally, close the dialogue-box: you come back to the main window.
• Notices: if the original and converted pictures have similar features, this last dialogue box doesn't appear. For instance, if you convert a 256-colour BMP into a GIF which is a 256-colour picture too…
• If you don't choose any output directory for the converted file, it's placed at the same location than the original file.
• Since the 1.5.0 version, the default output file-type is JPEG. However, when you chose another output format, it's kept and suggested for the next "Convert" use.
• With some PCs, this feature may work during the same session only!
• When you open a new XnView session, you have JPEG again as the output file-type…
• In this case, try in first to turn-off the PC. Then, reboot it.
• Launch XnView and test it for "Convert".
• If you find JPEG still as the output file-type:

  Close XnView.

  Open the ‹XnView› folder in Explorer or rather Total Commander if you have it installed,

  Find the ‹xnview.ini› file,

  Edit this file (double-click on it, or F4 key in Total Commander)

  Find the last-but-one section [Convert]

  There is a row:

  DefaultFormat=jpeg

  Change that row into your favourite default file-type, for instance:

  DefaultFormat=png

  Save the file,

  Close the file manager.

• Whether you chose: OptionsInstallUse registry to save options, that trick does not work.
• In this case, please send the PC-hardware configuration, the Windows® version and so on to the Author, and expound the problem to him.

• With the "Sequence Convert" command -from the "Tools" menu-, you can convert an increasing numbered order file-group like:

• A free slide-show in your PC!
  
• This function is launched from the "File" menu or from the Slide-show buttonon the browser tool-bar or from the main-window tool-bar too:
• A dialogue-box is displayed .
• View the dialogue-box
• There are twelve options to configure the show: tick the appropriate boxes.

  ---

• Operations order:

• Click on the "Add" button to choose scattered pictures, or on "Add folder" to select the whole files in a directory.
• The "Choose files" dialogue-box is displayed:
  
  
• The chosen files list is shown in the "Slide Show" dialogue-box upper frame.
• Click on the "Go" button: the slide-show starts; the default display is "Full screen"; you can obtain a smaller display with the configuration options.
• To quit the slide-show, strike the "Esc" key.

• New, since version 1.6x: now, this new double Slide Show buttonon the toolbar launches an automatic Slide Show,
• just press it once when a pic is opened.
• Pressing again on it stops the Slide Show.
• The small associated arrow-button opens a menu:

• Slide-show opens the dialogue quoted above to configure one characteristic slide-show.

• Command: the icon-button in the left-end twin-button on the tool-bar, or from the "File" menu.
• When a file is open already, you can press the Enter key too.
• You can do a double left-click also (must be set in the Options).
• You get the large browser window: 
• By default, the browser starts with the last previous open directory.
  You can change this from the OptionsGeneralStart Up section.
• Then, you can open the wanted directory from the Folders Tree (set in the left-side dock).
• This dock can be adjusted ¦hidden to get a larger useful space for the table area.
• The table area can be adjusted too.
• The display-style button  is available on the small tool-bar. It allows you to choose a view mode via a small menu; to get it, press the small arrow-button (right-side):
  
  
• From this menu, you can choose:

1. Thumb-nails (default), the pictures are displayed as a thumbnail-table. An info-text shows the information about the file.
   A right-click calls a local menu, where special browser commands are set, like the tumbnails size, the frames layout, etc. These commands are available too in the View menu which becomes:
   
   

2. Thumb-nails and labels allows to add some labels for the thumbnails. The labels you want for your thumb nails must be chosen in an Option page previously.
3. Thumb nails and details : Same as Details List further, but each row begins with a thumb nail on which all overlay markers are displayed (Exif, IPTC, Rating etc.)
   You need thumb nails at least 80 pixels high, or else the last row should be truncated at height.
4. Icons, the files are shown as an icon of each file-type; files which aren't associated with a programmeme
   have a standard Windows icon like this one :
5. List, only the files names as (a) column(s).
6. Details, displays a table which provides a complete information for each picture, including the text-description, Rating etc..

• When you press the display-style button (image), the display comes back to next View always (Menu order)…

  ---

• To open the file from its thumb-nail:
• With any view mode, you can display a picture :
• Normally onto the main-window by a double-click on its symbol. The table disappears.
•  To come back to the browser, strike the "Esc" key or else, according to your settings.
• With a single click, the picture is displayed onto the browser-window Preview area.
  Hence, don't enlarge the table area too much!
• You can "Drag & Drop" the file on the Preview area too. Every new file replaces the previous one.
• Old feature… It's getting impossible with the new machines…

The sub-menu Filter by allows to display the files as thumb-nails for some file-types only :

The same menu is also reachable from the small tool-bar using the “Filter by” button

The sub-menu Sort by…allows to choose the current sorting mode. You can get it too from it's button on the small tool-bar.

• Since the 1.90 version, there are small arrow-buttons set in the adjustable borders¦separators of the panels.
  They allow to show¦hide these panels independently.
• Despite long discussions on the forum, tests and a lot of mock-ups, finally they remain hard to spot and to handle still…
• It's worth to see the three pages…

• The images above are exactly the same than the programme ones at size, this needs only that the Author provides means to choose them, in example in the Skins, or from external small BMP-libraries…

• To build the “menu” which allows you to display your favourite folders directly :

• In the displayed menu, click on : Add Favourite…, you get a dialogue-box :

• For the current dir, the name is already written in the field; you can change it, of course.
• Placing a & character (red marked) before a character of the name, you might get a hot-key letter; unfortunately, this function doesn't work yet … It has been requested, though.
• The reason is known : This is saved in the INI plain text file <bookmark.ini>, this is not in a real menu…
• To modify the title of an item in the menu, or to remove one entry (or several entries…), click on Edit Favourite Folders,

• Select the appropriate branch,
• With the Rename button, you get the previous dialogue-box where you can modify an entry.
• The Remove button deletes the selected row¦s.

• Several very useful commands are available from these “Tools” and “Create” menus, for instance :
• Search, opens a dialogue-box from which you can search images files in all drives. Usual wildcards are supported.

  ---

• Create Multi-page file, with which you can create a pic-library as *.TIFF or *.DCX format, from various pics formats, and also *.ICO from Windows icons only, of course.
  The “Portable Document Format” and the “Lura Document Format” are also available as output format
  (since the 1.91x versions only).
  The command calls the dialogue-box below :
  
  
  
  
• First, it's strongly recommended to set the packing format for TIFF, like shown on the second image above :
• OptionsRead¦WriteWrite tab TIFF.
• Using the ZIP option for both Colours and Binary B-W images, you'll get *.TIF files having a much smaller size than before (version 1.60)

1. Choose the destination directory for the multi-page file to create,
2. Choose a name for this file,
3. Choose the format…
4. Press the Add button : you get the appropriate choice-dialogue for the files to embed in the multi-page:

5. Choose the files in the same way than for Convert
6. Press the OK button : you come back to the creation-box
7. Press the Create button
8. Close the box.

• To display the images contained inside the multi-page :
• Open the file normally (File Menu or button…),
• You get the image # 1 ,
• The Previous Page ¦ Next Page buttons are enabled,
• Use them to view the multi-page content…
• Now, you can edit a multi-page to modify it.
• View the dialogue-box to edit a multi-page.
• With the 1.8x versions, you can save the output file as Windows icon (multiple icon), like you can see in the screen-shot above.

• From the Create Multipage sub-menu, you can extract all images from the library in two modes.

  ---

• Whether you want for create a multi-page from the whole content of a pic-directory, be sure that this directory does not contain a ‹descript.ion› hidden file !
• If such a file is present in the folder, now we get a warning message since the 1.7x versions. But the creation is aborted.
• If this file - or any other non-image one - is present but not hidden, we might get another warning, telling that file-format couln't be defined (as an image).
• However, and for unknown reasons, in some cases this warning doesn't appear before you launch the creation, but while the creation is running already !
• That limits the library creation up to the file which the name precedes “descript”, or the name of the inopportune file (probably according to the current sorting-mode).
• In this case, you have to remake the multi-page; to avoid the creation locking by ‹descript.ion› or any other non-image file:

  Move ‹descript.ion› temporarily into any empty directory,

  Remake the multi-page with all pics, like you wished before.

  Don't change any setting: the bad multi-page file'll be overwritten.

  When done, move again ‹descript.ion› into its original directory.

• Because itsn't very handy, we asked for an improvement from the Author, i.e. : skip the undesirable file(s), or exclude totally some types…

  ---

• JPEG Lossless Transformations,
  especially planned for the JPG format transformations: mirror-effects and rotations.
• Its button is enabled only when a JPG is displayed.
• Please, use this function only for these operations with JPEG pictures!

1. Select at least one picture on the thumb-nail table; to select several pictures, strike the CTRL key and keep it pressed.
   Now, the button becomes available on the tool-bar.
   Use it or the "Tools" menu command to display the thumbnail(s) HTML page creation-box: 
2. Use the various tick-boxes and writing-fields to configure the page.
3. Choose the rows and colums numbers following your thumbnails number and size. If all tumbnails can't be placed on the page -with the chosen setting-, XnView builds (a) supplemental page(s).
4. Click: "Create".
5. Close the box.
6. Using: Open the HTML file from a Web or offline browser.
7. Clicking on each thumbnail, you get each corresponding picture as its original size!

• Create Contact Sheet builds a thumbnail-page too,
  its icon is activated as soon as you have selected one thumb-nail at least.
• This command is launched from the "Tools" menu or from the "Contact Sheet" button :
• The default for this button is disabled; to enable it:   Tool-bar  "Options"  "Tool-bar".
• The "Contact Sheet" creation-box is shown below:
  
  
  
• Please, use it to configure the page.
• Originally, the sheet was created as BMP only by default… With the actual versions, you can save it as any supported format.
• However, by tradition, the BMP motif is still present on our tool-bar skins…
• Operations:

Choose carefully the “Width” and “Height”…

Avoid to exceed your screen definition, or else you'll get unpleasant scrolling-bars!

Try to planne the page as so small as possible, following your thumbnails size and number.

Choose other options…

When ended, click: "Create",

Close the box.

Notices:

If you wish to save as BMP anyway : The default BMP quality - 256-colour 16millions-colour - is set with regard to the current PC display-mode.

If the colour-number is too high, you can resave the file into a lower quality with MS-Paint® or similar.

To decrease the file size keeping a high quality, save directly as JPG or as PNG format.

The two previous functions are NOT usable outside the Browser. This independant use is planned for a future version…

• Compare, this new tool allows you to compare two images (or more) visually,
  when they are selected in the browser.
• A check-sum is displayed for each image in the comparison-window (SFV only currently…)
• When you use the image-tabs, give the focus to the tab-bar with the TAB key,
  then browse the tabs using the Left¦Right arrows keys.

• Create a strip of images allows you to create a single comic-like image from selected pics.
  Formerly : “Panorama”.
• In the 1.80.x versions, that function has been named Attach Images. Since it isn't very meaningful - especially when translated into other languages - there was a discussion in the Forum in order to choose a better expression… “Create a strip of images” won.
• The command is set on the Tools Menu (normal and browser one)
• It opens a dialogue, so similar to the "Multi-Page" one.
• View the dialogue & an example
• Press the Add button to open the classic choice dialogue-box.
• When you chose the pics, press Create.
• The image strip is displayed on the screen immediately, always under the title <Panorama> still.
  It must be changed in a next version, indeed.
• You have to save it as any supported format, using the Save as… button on the toolbar.
• If you tick the box Automatically adjust…, the pictures will be resized according to the direction you chose to join the images. For instance, if you choose an horizontal strip, all images will be resized into the same height.
• Starting from the 1.9.2x versions, options have been added, allowing a wrapping of the rows,
  thus you can create a real comic page now…

 Batch transform 

• These various commands are set in the “Image” and “Filter” menus.
• But you can get the whole of these advanced operations from the “Convert” button,
  just click the Transformations tab on the new dialogue.
• Below, the “Transformations” page :
  
  
  
  
  
• Since the 1.82 version, a large part of image-transformations can be performed in a batch, so several images can be processed as one go for several transformations.
• You must choose the files and paths in the first “General” dialogue to use the Batch Transformations.
• First, select a process to apply in the left-hand scrolling-list.
• Press the “Add” button, the chosen process is displayed in the right-hand panel.
• With the 1.82x versions, the parameters to set are directly placed onto the corresponding frame.
• With the 1.90x versions, you must click once on the row in the right-hand panel.
• A double-click removes the process at right !
• You may choose a second… third… process. Use thebuttons then to set the order in which each process must be applied.
• Here, we show the process list of the 1.82 version. With the 1.90x versions, that list is built as a tree which the branches can be expanded ¦ collapsed, that indeed is handier…

• To make a XnView update into a new version, it's better to download a ZIP package.
• This method avoids to have two versions installed; in fact, this problem could happen if you chose a different path than the default at the first install…
• Operations:
• Unpack this ZIP into a temp directory,
• Copy ¦ move the new "xnview.exe" file into the <XnView> dir.,
• Copy ¦ move the new "*.TXT" files into the same dir. than above,
•  Copy ¦ move the <Plugins> sub-dir. into <XnView>; this sub-dir. contains additional libraries to support or improve the picture display ¦ processing (special formats)… Since the 1.24 version only.
• Replace the <language> sub-dir files.
• If your PC is old a little and not very powerful, you can keep the indispensable *.DLL only in both previous sub-dirs.
•  Copy ¦ move the <Help> sub-dir. into <XnView>
  You'll unzip the "Help" folder into this sub-dir.
•  Copy ¦ move the <Filters> sub-dir. into <XnView>.
•  Copy ¦ move the <Skins> sub-dir. into<xnview>.
• For each update, look for any new possible sub-dir added by the Author…
• If the browser-cache is enabled, clear it pressing the "Remove all" button in the Options:
  Options buttonBrowserThumb nailsCache Tab.
• When these update operations are ended, it's strongly recommended to restart the PC when using still the Win 9x systems.
