XnView main features 

is a software which edits a very large number of image-formats : more than 500 formats!
Large display possibilities with all formats (reading). The information about the current file can be read on the lower status-bar

Interface
Tick the box : Add the most recent used files / Directories to menu “File”.

The “Edit” menu 

Describe : Allows to display a comment in the status-bar. A small box is displayed. Write the comment in the field, then press “OK”.

Add text… Version 1.60: a dialogue-box allows you to add a text on the picture itself. It's possible with formats where writing is allowed, of course!

Edit colormap Version 1.60: this menu commands a palette display; it contains only the colours of the current image-file.

Registration: allows you to enter your registration number. Then, this command is blurred.

Back to: text. Default output file type
To select several files in this directory, strike the "Control" key and keep it pressed. Click on every file to convert; when it's ended, click "OK".
You come back to the
previous box.


Since the 1.5.0 version, the default output file-type is JPEG. However, when you chose another output format, it's kept and suggested for the next "Convert" use.
Install
Use registry to save options, that trick does not work.

Then, you can open the wanted directory from the Folders Tree (set in the left-side dock).
The display-style button is available on the small tool-bar. It allows you to choose a view mode via a small menu; to get it, press the small arrow-button (right-side):
Thumb-nails (default), the pictures are displayed as a thumbnail-table. An info-text shows the information about the file.


The sub-menu “Thumbnail Size” is shown beside the menu.
Thumb-nails and labels allows to add some labels for the thumbnails. The labels you want for your thumb nails must be chosen in an Option page previously.
When you press the display-style button (image), the display comes back to next View always (Menu order)
To open the file from its thumb-nail:
To come back to the browser, strike the "Esc" key or else, according to your settings.
With a single click, the picture is displayed onto the browser-window Preview area.
The sub-menu Filter by allows to display the files as thumb-nails for some file-types only :

The sub-menu Sort by…allows to choose the current sorting mode. You can get it too from it's button on the small tool-bar.

It doesn't work with 16 BPP (65,536 colours).

Press the
Favourite Folders button, located in the small tool-bar.

With the Rename button, you get the previous dialogue-box where you can modify an entry.

From the arrow-button (Browser twin-button of the “View” tool-bar), you can get too a direct active list limited to the ten first items

Search, opens a dialogue-box from which you can search images files in all drives. Usual wildcards are supported.
Create Multi-page file, with which you can create a pic-library
as *.TIFF or *.DCX format, from various pics formats, and also *.ICO from Windows icons only, of course.

Now, you can edit a multi-page to modify it.

Whether you want for create a multi-page from the whole content of a pic-directory, be sure that this directory does not contain a descript.ion hidden file !
- Move descript.ion temporarily into any empty directory,
- Remake the multi-page with all pics, like you wished before.
- Don't change any setting: the bad multi-page file'll be overwritten.
- When done, move again descript.ion into its original directory.
